In August, a woman from Delhi had lodged a complaint after receiving a call from a man claiming to be a representative of 'KBC'.The caller told her that she has won Rs25 lakh in a luckydrawand asked for a processing fee of Rs8,000. After she deposited the amount, she received another call for more money. Growing suspicious, the woman filed a complaint with the Delhi Police .
Police officials tell us that though they have online and offline campaigns to warn people people about such scamsters, they still fall prey. A senior police official tells us, “We get a number of calls from people telling us, ‘Maine kabhi KBCke quiz ka jawab toh nahi diya tha, par mujhe laga ho sakta hai mera number luckily lag gaya ho’.”.

Explaining how the scammers lure victims, Bhishma Singh, DCP, Crime Branch , says, “The victim is either approached on WhatsApp or gets a call that he/she has won Rs10/20/35 lakh after correctly answering a quiz question. People file a formal complaint only after they have been duped out of some money. But they should inform the police as soon as they get such calls/messages instead of responding to them.” Most of the numbers from which fake calls have been received begin with 0092.
